**8/14/10** We have a job opening! After many years of dedicated service, Madeleine Robertson is resigning
as Treasurer of PNWLS as of December 31, 2010. We will miss Madeleine's steady hand at our financial helm
and we are grateful for her years of service. We wish Madeleine and Jerry all the best in their "real" retirement!
If
anyone is interested in taking on this task, it is probably the hardest one in the Society. The position requires keeping
track of Bulb Sale and membership funds, maintaining a mailing and e-mail list database for members, and handling our
bank accounts. The person who takes this on must be computer literate and detail-oriented and be prepared to attend as many
of the Society business meetings as possible. Please contact us at info@pnwls.org if you are interested in this position;
we will need to nominate and vote on all candidates at the October business meeting. We need you!
****************************** 4/8/10 - Don't miss the Spring Plant Sale & Garden Festival of the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon, April 17 &
18, 2010 at the Expo Center. Hundreds of vendors will be offering the widest selection of plants to be found in
one place, including lily bulbs of course! FREE admission (but you have to pay for parking) Find out more from
the HPSO Web site.

to send bulletin items for publication or any related questions to editor@pnwls.org .

obituary notice in its entirety on this page instead of adding a link. Sorry for the delay.
OBITUARY
Mary M. Hoffman
Born March 12, 1929 in Eugene, Oregon
to Harry and Ruth Myers. Mary grew up in small Oregon communities through the Depression years until her family moved to
Portland where she graduated from Grant High School in 1945. An ambitious student, she entered Oregon State
University at age 16 and received a BS in botany in 1949. While at OSU she met and married Willard E. Hoffman. Although her
primary occupation of the first part of her adult life was as a homemaker and mother of four children,
she maintained an active intellectual life and continued to nurture her interest in botany and horticulture. As her children
grew older Mary found work in newspapers and developed a second career as a journalist; beginning with garden
columns in the Newport News-Times and the Ontario Argus Observer and culminating as society editor for the Oregon City Enterprise
Courier. Her feature stories relating to the local community earned her recognition by the Oregon Women’s
Press Club. Throughout her adult life Mary was an active member of many clubs
and organizations such as the League of Women Voters, American Association of University Women, North American Lily Society,
North American Rock Garden Society, and the Hardy Plant Society. She contributed countless volunteer hours on national conference
planning boards, bulb and plant sales, and on editorial boards for various botanical journals. She served for a time on the
Clackamas County Library and was recognized for her successful efforts to promote passage of library
levies. Mary loved gardening, books, sewing, baking, and rug hooking and will be remembered for her avid curiosity, generous
giving of time and knowledge, acute sense of humor and hearty laughter, and of course, her homemade
cookies. Mary passed away on the night of the first fall frost, October 12, 2009, following a thirteen year triumph over multiple
myeloma. Her husband of 59 years, Willard Hoffman and her brother, Bill Myers preceded her in death. She is survived by an
overgrown, miraculous garden and three daughters, Margaret Ceniceros, Sylvia Hoffman, and Diana Milia;
a son, Wayne Hoffman; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Navarro and Anna-Maria Ceniceros; and two great-granddaughters. Donations
made in the memory of Mary Hoffman may be made to the Clackamas County Library System.

11/15/09 - We are pleased to anounce that our new Bulletin editor is Sue Wall! PNWLS would like to thank
Sue for taking on this post. She is looking for new material in order to produce a newsletter before the end of the year,
so please send your articles to her at editor@pnwls.org .

**10/22/09 - PNWLS has learned that
Mary Hoffman passed away a few days ago after a long battle with cancer. Mary was greatly loved by all, and she was also
a founding member of the Society and a tireless supporter of the club's activities, including running our bulb sale for
many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Hoffman, nearly two years ago. I hope to post her obituary
when it is available. She is survived by son Wayne Hoffman and daughters Margaret Ceniceros, Sylvia
Hoffman and Diana Hoffman Milia. We will miss Mary very much.**
9/26/09
- Our Fall bulb sale & meeting will be held on Saturday 10/24/09 - please visit the Bulb Sale Info page for details.

7/28/09 - UPDATE - Due to the extremely hot and even dangerous weather conditions, there will not be a picnic at the Maks' this
year. Johan is reporting that most of the lilies in his field have bloomed already, and if we wait until the second weekend
in August they will all be done. Judith Freeman has also said that her field is through for the year. Our lily season
started a little late this year, but the unprecedented warm weather over the past few weeks have accelerated blooming.
If we don't schedule anything to replace the picnic, we will see you in the fall!
6/30/09 - PNWLS is
planning a July event but the exact date has not been set yet due to uncertain bloom times - we are having a late season this
year. Tentative dates are July 18 or 19, OR July 25 or 26, 2009. Watch for announcements here and by mail.
*EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PREVIEW OF NALS CD!*
Our own Kathleen Mingl has released
a preview copy of the new NALS Popularity Poll and Hall of Fame lily CD. Representative
pictures of many popular lilies have been collected from the many people who contributed to this project. I have
put up a link to the Introduction at the top of this page. It is a gorgeous collection, so go take a look at the Picture Gallery,
where some of the images will be posted soon. Thank you, Kathleen!
