Our Spring
business meeting and members-only bulb sale will be held on Saturday, March 22, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. - the location is Mt. Hood
Community College in Gresham, Oregon. The room number is 1710 on the lower level near Parking Lot "Z." Most members should
already have their bulb sale notice - Order deadline is Wed. March 12!
Our speaker will be a familar and friendly face -Dr. Dave
Adams, longtime Oregon agricultural extension agent and now retired, will share his expertise with a talk on the topic
"Match Your Media To The Situation: Gardens Or Containers." He is a world-class expert on soils, so bring your questions along
with your goodies!
**WE HAVE ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT - from
Jerry and Madeleine Robertson -PLEASE READ!
Madeleine and Jerry Robertson have
decided this will be their last bulb sale. They have been at it for almost ten years and feel it is time for others
to take over the job. We are asking for volunteers. Pam Johnston has agreed to be the contact person: please e-mail
her at pamelaj@spiritone.com if you would like to be involved, or if you have suggestions, or
both.
We are interested in ideas about better ways for
PNWLS to run its bulb sale. Just because we have always done them in the current fashion does not mean the system
cannot be improved, or changed completely. You can share your thoughts with Pam.
Thank you,
Madeleine and Jerry Robertson

**NEWS UPDATE - NALS 2008 SHOW***
For those who wish to attend the 2008
NALS International Lily Conference and Show in Victoria B.C. Canada, everything you will need to know is on the NALS 2008 Web Site.
Now another special announcement has been made - here it
is in Jill Britton's own words:
The Species Lily Preservation Group (SLPG) is planning a
“lily chase” in Southern Oregon and Northern
California immediately following the Victoria NALS Conference. It will be led by Wayne Hoffman (a speaker at the
conference) and Barbara Small. Click on the SLPG tour button in http://nals2008.org for more information. The SLPG tour web page includes a
map and photos from the “chase” Walter and I took with Wayne Hoffman a few years ago. By the way, the two of us
are joining this one, we had so much fun the last time. Note that SLPG members will have priority over anyone else ...
but you can always join the SLPG. Please notify Barbara Small before March 1, 2008 if you want to come
along. Contact information is at the bottom of the SLPG tour page.
Brian Bergman of Ontario, Canada has already registered
for the conference. He brought over 100 stems to Edmonton. Yikes!
A link to bed-and-breakfast accommodation has been added
to the Accommodation link and the Friday Auction (a First Nations wild salmon BBQ) now includes a closeup of the totem pole
at the venue and some background First Nations flute music. Trivial additions to be sure, but Walter and I went slightly batty getting
that flute music to play.

***NEWS UPDATE***
It
is with great sadness that we report the passing of PNWLS member Bill Hoffman at the age of 87 on November 26, 2007. Bill
was a charter member of the Society and a stalwart supporter of our club activities, along with his wife Mary. Together they
ran our bulb sale for many years, helped organize our shows, and were pillars of the organization in more ways than anyone
could count. He will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mary Hoffman and their children - son Wayne
Hoffman and daughters Margaret Ceniceros, Sylvia Hoffman and Diana Hoffman Milia. He also leaves a brother, Richard Hoffman.
Remembrances may be sent to the Clackamas County Library.
Although he was an indispensable part of the Lily Society, Bill had a special place in his heart for the
Iris, and was also a master photographer and avid birder. He was a member of the Audubon Society, Hardy Plant Society and
Rock Garden Society. Visitors to the Hoffman house saw the clear evidence of a true bibliophile, as their home was always
filled with books on many subjects, including many on gardening and birds. Their own garden is a wonder filled with special
treasures. Bill’s quiet and occasionally gruff exterior concealed a keen intelligence, a deep generosity and a willingness
to share his knowledge and experience with others. Our Society will not be the same without him.
***WINTER MEETING ALERT***
Our Winter 2007 meeting will be
at Oregon Flowers in Aurora, Oregon on Saturday, December 8th at 1:30 p.m. Full details will be in the Fall bulletin,
which has already been mailed out. As they do each year, Martin and Helene Meskers have graciously invited us to their beautiful
facility for a tour and holiday gathering of Lily friends and guests. We hope you will join us!
For any of you who have not been to Oregon Flowers before,
here is a link to their Web site - take a look, it will make you eager to attend!
*EXCLUSIVE SNEAK PREVIEW OF NALS CD!*
Our own Kathleen Mingl has released
a preview copy of the new NALS Popularity Poll and Hall of Fame lily CD. Representative
pictures of many popular lilies have been collected from the many people who contributed to this project. I have
put up a link to the Introduction at the top of this page. It is a gorgeous collection, so go take a look at the Picture Gallery,
where some of the images will be posted soon.
Thank you, Kathleen!
